Craig McCaw Resigning as Clearwire Chairman

December 30, 2010

We are still digging up details and background but according to several reports including this story from Bloomberg Businessweek legendary cellular pioneer Craig McCaw is set to resign as chairman of Clearwire on Friday.

Just pure guessing (and no inside information) would lead us to surmise that some significant transfer of power (and a likely infusion of new funding) is happening at the top of Clearwire, and whatever that is, perhaps those who are bringing the new money in don’t want the heavy presence of McCaw around? We are still waiting to hear the reasons behind Sprint’s recent board nominations of some industry heavyweights including longtime telephony leader Hossein Eslambolchi, and maybe this is part of the machinations. In the meantime, here’s some video of Craig McCaw talking about Clearwire at a CTIA show a while back. Watch this space for more info Friday!

Craig McCaw: Innovation Still Matters

September 16, 2008

Here’s a short video clip of Clearwire chairman Craig McCaw’s recent talk at the CTIA confab in San Francisco. While McCaw thinks that Clearwire’s WiMax wireless data service will be wonderful, he’s not ignorant of the handset that is currently revolutionizing the way people think about the wireless Internet.

Maybe McCaw thinks, like we do, that the iPhone 3G could be the New Clearwire’s biggest competition. Why? Because no matter how fast the new network is, they’re going to need some snappy new devices to help make the mobile Internet a reality. (Andy and I can only hope that our predictions come true, and that Mr. McCaw and Mr. Jobs figure out some way to work together here!)

Sure, laptops with WiMax embedded inside will be a handy way to work without having to spring for a latte every half-hour. But a WiMax-enabled Apple tablet or an iPhone WiMax? Gimme!
