For your weekend viewing pleasure, a bit of a commercial from Cisco and Clearwire, talking about WiMAX services in Atlanta. A little long, but the customer interviews are interesting. And, Cisco’s video skilz make it easy to consume.
Clearwire is scheduled to “officially” launch its Atlanta WiMax services Tuesday, June 16. Since there’s no big media event planned — apparently it is all local and consumer-oriented, which makes sense — there hasn’t been much in the way of official communications from the company (UPDATE: here is the press release). But since we know people outside of Atlanta are interested in what kind of pricing Clearwire is offering there, we have put together this sampler of service plans and prices — but beware, this could change at any second!
(Even though we included such a chart with our recent Clearwire NTK report, using prices for the Portland, Ore., market, those prices have *already* changed to sync with the newer, lower Atlanta pricing for some of the options.)
Anyway, here is the pricing sampler chart — saving you the hassle of spoofing the Clear registration page, which makes you enter a qualified address to get this info. All the prices below are for 2-year plans, for which the company will eliminate the $35 “activation fee.” There are also some lower introductory prices, so if you are really shopping then go to the site and see what kind of deal you can get.
No confirmation yet from the company, but we are hearing from sources in Peachtree land that Clearwire will “officially” launch its Atlanta services market next Tuesday, June 16. Stay tuned for more news as we hear it.
We will update this as the call progresses: So far it’s a pretty strong performance from new CEO Bill Morrow — clearly he has done this kind of thing before.
Press release on numbers is out — Clearwire says it added 25,000 new subscribers over Q1. Won’t break out numbers but you have to think most are in Portland, where Clearwire launched its new mobile services Jan. 6. But the total does include all Clearwire’s pre-WiMax markets. By comparison, the company added just 5,000 new subs in Q4 before Portland was launched. So conservatively — 20,000 new customers in Portland in 3 months.
Talk about your soft launch — nothing says the genteel South like starting to sell WiMax services without so much as a by-your-leave. Looks like our pals over at WiMax.com saw what we discovered surfing around the Clear.com site tonight — Clearwire has added coverage maps for Atlanta, much of which it labels as “now serving.” Just call it WiMax for all y’all.
No official press release yet on the Clearwire site, but we will keep our eyes open and relay once we see it. Atlanta was one of the next scheduled markets on the rollout schedule Clearwire announced in March. The “launch” is just in time for next week’s earnings call, which should be interesting since it will be the first time the “new” Clearwire will report subscriber numbers for its Portland market launched in January.
