Clearwire: No Discount on the Mondi
When we first reported the availability of the Samsung Mondi mobile Internet device for Clearwire’s network, we thought we had a pretty rock-solid source of information — the director of public relations for Samsung Telecommunications USA. Turns out, however, that the promised discount price of $350 (for purchasing a Mondi and a two-year Clear service contract) does not exist, according to Clearwire.
Though Samsung PR reps were still telling us Tuesday that the discount was available, Clearwire reps said it wasn’t, and we were unable to find the lower pricing online anywhere, especially in the main place where it counts, the Clearwire ordering page.
So for now the price for the Mondi remains at $449.99, no discount. And no explanation yet on why the $350 price was even mentioned — we have to admit we were surprised when the Samsung rep told us that price, since all along we’ve heard the mantra from Clearwire being all about “no subsidized devices.” Unfortunately for those who wanted a bonus to try the Mondi, no dice. We do have a call in to the Samsung PR director who told us the price originally, will update if/when we receive more info.
